Love Poem

Imma be honest, I'm not really a love poet*
I can't tell you how many times I've tried
To write a love poem and failed
But I can tell you this
Love is complicated
I guess that's what makes it so hard..

Maybe I can write about
The woman I dream of spending my life with
How I've been waiting for her for 23 years
The way morning waits for the sun
Hoping that one day I will find a woman
Who reflects God more clearly than
Stevie Wonder sees music

Or I can write about Tori Kelly

Or that girl I had a crush on
For at least 4 years
But for some reason
Courage decided to take a very long vacation

Or I can write about
How I'm afraid of commitment
The same way I'm afraid of heights
I know being there won't hurt me
But the thought of falling
Paralyzes me from making any type of decision
Embracing it is the last thing on my mind

Or I can write about
How my eyes have seen things
My heart is too ashamed to admit
False perversions of love
Poisoned my brain's cells
Leaving me a prisoner of past sins' effects
And I'm still powerless to shake it
Sometimes I wonder
If my walls can speak of what they've witnessed
Would people still love me the same?

Or I can write about
How hugs still make me uncomfortable
Matter of fact
I get really, really nervous every time
Someone comes close enough to touch me
And I still believe in cooties

Or I can write about
That John Legend and D'angelo kind of love
That grown man type stuff
Cause my woman gon be so s.. Beautiful
But don't worry
Imma have a ring on it

Or I can write about
That one time I was in a relationship
And how it reminded me that
No book, speaker, song, or movie
Can fully prepare you for the school that is reality
Roses 102
Left me with scars that don't seem to fade
I learned growing up is always a struggle
And some doors are better left closed

Or I can write about
My mom
Who has been our foundation
Her spine is a tower
That has weathered storms
In order to hold us up to the heights
At which we stand on
Her sacrifice speaks of love
Louder than words will ever need to

Or I can write about
How I express and receive love
The same way I handle dates
I still have no idea what I'm doing
So it hides behind sarcasm and awkwardness
If you happen to find it
I guess we're really friends

See love, is the song
We've been wanting to sing
For our whole lives
But we can never hit the right notes
We're stuck in the wrong key
We don't know the lyrics
We are children trying to catch bubbles
How many times have we settled for the less that only fails us?
After pouring our hearts out
Only to see them spilt
All over the floor
We just wish our dreams
Would make their home in our hands

So I should write about real love
That ride or die love
The love that loved us first
When there was no inherent reason to
The love that leaves Heaven
And crashes onto our shores
The love that looks death right in the face
And claims us as His own
The love that pursues us
Although we reject it
It invades darkness like a smile
Bursting through sealed lips
When joy breaks the chains of melancholy
The love that is not blood related
But through blood creates
Bonds deeper than subterranean
Pierces our hard hearts jaded
From too many days chasing wind
Straight to the core
With weapons cupid couldn't afford
The love that breathes life into our souls
Awakening our hearts' retinas
To experience what Helen Keller
Could only imagine
The moment water waltzed on her hand
To see beauty without the filters that distort our views
No 50 shades of filthiness
This is pure, vibrant, authentic
The love that is not fleeting
Like boys who run from fights
When they realize manhood
Is standing on the other side of the ring
This love has planted it's anchor in truth
And will stand when time flatlines
So stop searching like a chameleon trying to find it's identity
This treasure
Is found at the intersection of two beams wooden
Here - the greatest love poem of all time
By the Author who offers it freely
