The Present is a Gift

"This is the day that the LORD has made; 
let us rejoice and be glad in it." - Psalm 118:24

Every day I remember that verse, thanks to a good friend of mine. I used to wake up in the morning and think, "Ah man, another day..." Now I wake up and think, "Man, another day!" There's no such thing as a regular day. Every day is special because God has made it. He planned it out. He blesses us with another day and we can choose to either go through the motions or find joy in it. Of course, not every day is going to be rainbows and sunshine. But I definitely appreciate every one and try to treat it as special. I know I'm living in the Christ and God blesses me abundantly, so I can just rejoice and be glad because I know I have God.

The fact that every day is a new day holds more meaning to me. Every morning and every night I ask God to renew me. Just as Jesus said, "Each day has enough trouble of it's own" (Matthew 6:34). In the morning, I know I'm going to go through a lot and by the end of the day I know I have. I've sinned numerous times and I need that renewal. Not only this but I know that no matter how good or bad the previous day was, I can't hold on to that. I have to pursue a stronger relationship every day, so by asking for renewal in the beginning of the day I remind myself of this and it pushes me to seek Him more, as if I'm starting over every day.


"Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed" (Psalm 139:16). Our days are numbered. Our time on this Earth is short. It all goes by so fast. But don't let them just pass you up. Don't just go through the motions. Don't dwell on the past. Let's appreciate and make the most of every day. Each one is a new experience, a new page in your book, whatever you want to call it. They are all special and have something different in store. You just have to find it! Take on a new attitude. Be joyful and allow God to work in your life and bless you. Every single day. When you feel like you're having an off-day just remember: This is the day the LORD has made!


"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day." - 2 Corinthians 4:16

Reflections In The Fire

Hope is my center. Hope in God, who cares for both the body and soul. Hope for a better world. Hope for liberation. Hope for restoration. These past couple months I've spent a great deal of time reimagining what these look like as well as my place in all of this. And I'm always brought back to the idea of hope. Not in the sense of wishing for something, gambling with fate. But knowing that because of where my hope is, what I hope for will one day come, whether I get to see it fully bloom or not - hope deferred is still hope. So though my faith may often be like the waves, I know that hope is that steady rock. My reality is grounded by my hope in the Heavens. And while I have lost it many times, it pulls me back to remind me that restoration will come. Liberation will come. In his farewell address, our beloved 44th President Barack Obama left us with this charge; words my heart resonated with because, even though he said this in the context of our participation in democracy and the political arena, that is what my life has been about for the past few years. It's what the Lord called me to and it's what I am learning to embrace more and more. You ever just sit and wonder how you ended up where you are right now?
