The True Source of Love

"God is love" - 1 John 4:16

Today is Valentine's Day and I thought I was going to write a long blog today relating to it, but I don't think I need to say much. Everybody wants love and people search for it in so many different places. We often look to other people, activities, things that make us feel a sense of worth. We tend to believe that one special person can complete us. If just this one thing happens, everything will be fine.

Our world is filled with ideas about love and how to find it. But none of these things will fill that void in our hearts. Nothing will satisfy that longing we have inside for love other than God. Because God is love. And the love He offers is infinite and perfect.

I have searched for love in so many places throughout my life and messed up many times. Through all my mistakes, God's unfailing love for me remained. Once I saw it, my search was over. We don't have to spend our lives pursuing love in all kinds of places, which will fail. God offers His love to us in Himself. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). We don't have to do anything to earn it either. We just need to turn away from all these other things and turn to Jesus. There is nothing like His love. Any attempt I can possibly make to explain it would be foolish. It is too great. "Taste and see..." (Psalm 34:8).

"For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." - Romans 8:38-39

Reflections In The Fire

Hope is my center. Hope in God, who cares for both the body and soul. Hope for a better world. Hope for liberation. Hope for restoration. These past couple months I've spent a great deal of time reimagining what these look like as well as my place in all of this. And I'm always brought back to the idea of hope. Not in the sense of wishing for something, gambling with fate. But knowing that because of where my hope is, what I hope for will one day come, whether I get to see it fully bloom or not - hope deferred is still hope. So though my faith may often be like the waves, I know that hope is that steady rock. My reality is grounded by my hope in the Heavens. And while I have lost it many times, it pulls me back to remind me that restoration will come. Liberation will come.
